COURSE DESCRIPTION In this course, scholars will read and respond to both historically and culturally significant works of literature, poetry, and drama in order to develop writing skills and to build literature and language analysis skills. To prepare for college and career readiness, scholars will also analyze and respond to socially and culturally significant works of expository text and non-fiction. In addition, an emphasis is placed on broadening knowledge though improving listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. Students will write focused and coherent essays, which will focus on narrative, informative and argumentative writing. CLASS MATERIALS For this class, you will need to bring the following items to class each day. Failure to come to class prepared could result in a lowered assignment score, phone call home, and/or other consequences as determined by the teacher.
CONDUCT EXPECTATIONS
13. Do not keep others from working; please stay on task. 14. Always do your best! Do all of your classwork; do it well; do it on time. Classroom Procedures and Policies BEFORE ENTERING THE CLASSROOM: Please put away cell phones, electronic devices, ear buds, and headphones and remove hats/hoods BEFORE entering my classroom. Make sure to check the front table for handouts. BE ON TIME: Quietly enter the classroom with an openness to learn and to participate. Bell-to-bell instruction is essential in order to support your learning needs. You are expected to be seated in your assigned seat BEFORE the tardy bell rings. All homework is due at the BEGINNING of class and will be considered late after that time unless otherwise noted. I do not accept late work. I do not accept incomplete work. A warning will be given for tardies 1-3, detention for tardies 4-6 and a referral for 7+ tardies. When seated, take out your weekly agenda, a black or blue pen and any other supplies that you may need. *Now is the time to place bags, purses and backpacks under your table. Make sure that your belongings are not blocking a walkway. DAILY AGENDA Begin completing your daily agenda as it appears on the board; do not modify the information. Make sure to write the date in MLA format. Your TILT (Today I learned that…) statement should be completed at the end of each class period. Do not forget! Weekly Agendas will be collected at the end of class on Fridays. *Incomplete or late agendas will not be accepted. You must complete ALL exit tickets in order to receive credit. Restroom Please plan accordingly. Try your best to use THE RESTROOM before SCHOOL, during break, during passing periods and/or during lunch. If it is an emergency, please raise your hand and ask permission. Once permission has been given, pick up the bathroom pass (located by the door) before leaving the room. Do not waste class time. No pit stops along the way. Go directly to the restroom and return in a timely fashion. Finished classwork early? Once you have completed your class work, double check your assignment. Make sure that directions have been followed, all parts are complete and that there are no capitalization, grammar or spelling errors. If instructed, submit your work. Once you have completed these steps, you have three options:
CLASS MATERIALS AND LAPTOP/CHROMEBOOK Come to class prepared with the required materials. In addition, it is very important that you fully charge your laptop nightly, so you will be ready for class each day. You will be using your laptop/chromebook on most days. END OF CLASS DISMISSAL Please do not pack up until you are instructed to do so. Do not line up at the door.
